Since its launch in 1997, the Volkswagen Audi Group's 1.8T 20V engine has won plenty of fans in the aftermarket and motorsport communities for its tuneability and robust nature, powering many a tweaked Golf GTI, Audi A3 and SEAT Leon. And thanks to Cat Cams' pioneering technology, many owners of cars powered by the 1.8T engine now enjoy superior power, torque and transient boost response courtesy of the Belgian valvetrain specialist's advanced cam profiles for the 20V powerplant.

However there has always been a fundamental drawback in the design of the VAG 1.8T's engine's cam drive arrangement, which can compromise outright performance particularly when aggressive camshaft profiles are used. This is because the original VAG cam drive design is a ‘hybrid' set up, whereby a cambelt drives the exhaust camshaft, while drive for the inlet profile is taken from a chain at the opposing end of the 20-valve cylinder head. While this works fine for 1.8T engines running mild camshaft profiles, when high lift / high duration motorsport profiles are installed, the torsional twist on both cams can combine with stretch in the inlet cam drive chain to cause the timing on cylinder number one to run retarded, with resultant loss of power and torque.

In addition the stock 1.8T 20-valve motor's cam drive set up makes it difficult for engine builders and tuners to optimise the cam timing for maximum performance. Altering the cam timing entails removing the rocker cover then resetting the inlet cam timing, which requires the removal of a series of small bolts on the cam chain wheels, which can be a fiddly and lengthy process.

Hence why Cat Cams has now designed a unique 1.8T 20V engine ‘twin pulley' set up to overcome these shortcomings. This new package will enable engine builders to easily extract maximum performance from their cam installs by speedily altering the inlet and exhaust cam timing, accurately and reliably. Consisting of a pair of Cat's ‘Truelock' pulleys, a set of performance boosting 1.8T 20V cam profiles, plus a specially designed crankshaft pulley, the kit features the following technical features:-

Cat Cam's True Lock adjustable cam pulleys are much more user friendly and accurate than traditional vernier pulleys. That's because while rival designs rely on a sliding vernier scale to indicate how much cam advance or retard has been dialled in, the True Lock pulleys use a unique, fool proof and considerably easier ‘pin and hole' system.

The system is simple in operation – around the face of the True Lock pulley is a series of drilled holes representing one degree of cam advance or retard. Users simply have to undo the securing bolts and then rotate the two parts of the pulley until the supplied alignment pin slides into the desired hole. The pulley is then bolted back together, the locking pin is removed and the user can be confident that the cam timing is set accurately, without the need to align hard-to-see vernier scales. Cat Cam's True Lock pulleys also offer far greater strength than conventional vernier pulleys, because rather than relying on three easily rounded off allen screws to secure the two parts of the pulley, the True Lock pulleys use five 8mm bolts to provide a robust fixing mechanism that's rigid and secure for very high torque outputs.

Indeed strength is a key feature of the materials used for the True Lock pulleys – they are machined from top quality 7075 aluminium billets and the outer cam wheel is hard anodised to ensure durability.

Finally, but crucially, because the Cat Cams twin pulley package results in both cams being driven from the same end of the engine, the potential for unwanted retardation of the inlet timing on cylinder number one is eliminated, helping to boost power and torque on highly tuned 1.8T engines.
